The Real Fix for Nurse Burnout

We know what nurse burnout is.
We know it’s both a personal problem & an institutional one.
We’d love to have a perfect healthcare system to work in…
But we don’t have a perfect system and We’re not waiting.

The Problem with typical burnout advice

Nurses are sent to seminars about “Preventing Burnout”, “Techniques for dealing with burnout”, and other similar titles but most often the training taught does not work, feels dismissive and feels like it’s missing something.

As added insults, they add tasks to do on top of already overwhelming work schedules and in a roundabout way try to shift the blame onto the nurse.

The usual advice & techniques can include:

  • breathing exercises
  • developing habits & routines
  • meditation
  • nervous system regulation
  • positive thinking
  • taking “regular” breaks
  • even just “get professional help”
  • etc

Meditation is great, sure, but are nurses given dedicated meditation breaks during shifts?

The reason burnout coping techniques don’t work.

We would love it if techniques for burnout really gave lasting relief, but the relief is temporary with most advice.

Of course it’s nice to have some relief at all even if it’s temporary. A 5-minute break, or selfcare routine, does help a little, but we all know that the deeper feeling of exhaustion comes back.

the deeper feeling of exhaustion comes back… and We don’t want it.

The reason why the usual techniques don’t work is because they don’t give us a root cause solution. As healthcare professionals, nurses know that treating the symptom is not a proper solution — we must treat the source of the problem.

Everyone wants to have less stress, more clarity in life and at work.

The REAL FIX for Burnout

*This is going to sound different from other advice out there; keep an open mind.

The Real Fix for burnout cannot deal with only surface-level symptoms. We have to go below the surface, deeper to something at the core of how we experience life itself. It’s in realizing how we experience life that begins the transformation that eliminates burnout and countless other problems.

How to fix burnout in 3 steps

The way we fix burnout is actually by eliminating it and to eliminate it we have to start with a new mindset based on a new understanding.

  1. Understand that we experience life through our thoughts & feelings (about what we are living through) AND that we are NOT our thoughts, nor are we our feelings.
    • Take your time with this. You can see it for yourself.
  2. When we become aware that we are experiencing a thought, we can break out of the thought & attached feeling.
  3. This gives instant relief & a return to peace which allows us to better deal with anything happening in our lives.

It will sound too simple, but this is the beginning and the implications are astounding.

Life should be stress free. A woman dances in a field.

This is not some trick, or something you have to force yourself to believe. This is something you can test & verify for yourself (& you will if you learn how).

Once you do the work to verify and to inspect deeply your own thinking and truths about how consciousness works you will develop a great clarity that makes all of life easier.

We don’t have to live under the oppression of negative thoughts & feelings.

We can gain control, re-center our awareness, and move forward in purpose & peace.

This doesn’t mean we ignore reality.

Some people feel like this is akin to sticking our heads in the sand, but that is not what this teaching is about.

When we regain control, we empower our ability to deal with problems.

This changes all of life, not just your career.

This is the beginning.

The work of expanding on this understanding can be a lot but we’re here to offer guidance.
